When in Rome, do as the Romans do!
Tired of this cliché? Sorry can't help it.
Well, coming to the point, one also cannot escape the cricket world cup fever infecting everyone in the country. And, I am no exception, dear.
When everyone is talking about cricket and has an opinion, why not me? So, thats why, I said - "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"!
What did the Romans do? They watched Gladiatorial fights and exclaimed "Mamma Mia!". Our cricketers are our modern day Gladiators.
So here is my take on the cricket world cup 2011. While I write this, India have just won the Semi-final against Pakistan. You might have heard of the Broadway hit Musical - "Mamma Mia", or might even have watched the Movie - "Mamma Mia" staring Pierce Brosnan (which grossly did not do justice to the original Musical, in my opinion). For those of you who don't know, Mamma Mia is a musical based on songs of ABBA, one of the deservedly greatest bands ever.
Now, don't tell me that you have not heard of ABBA or listened to their songs. If not, you have missed one of the simplest, yet most fulfilling pleasures of human life. Its not too late and you can start right away with Youtube or buy their songs on iTunes. If you are not familiar with their songs or even with the happenings of the Cricket World Cup 2011, the following posting will not make sense to you and I suggest that you can as well stop reading at this point.
The following is a reflection of the events that happened during this world cup. Here is a look back on how this Cricket World Cup 2011 would have been like, had it also been a Musical like Mamma Mia. This musical is where the story of the world cup slowly unfolds and different cricketers sing to the songs of ABBA appropriate for each situation they are in. This is going to be a multi-part series of postings, depending on the length of the posts.
Now over to the Musical.
Scene:
All the fourteen team captains have gathered for the inaugural ceremony and a photo session. Each one is imagining that they will end up winning the cup. They are singing this chorus to the tune of "I have a dream":
I have a dream, a fantasy
To help me through reality
And my destination makes it worth the while
Pushing through the darkness still another mile
I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see
I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
I'll cross the stream - I have a dream
Scene:
Micheal Hussey looks very distraught at being omitted from the Australian world cup squad. He had claimed he was fit enough, but CA and his captain had overlooked his selection. He pours his heart out and starts singing to the tune of "S.O.S":
Where are those happy days,
They seem so hard to find
I tried to reach for you
But you have closed your mind
Whatever happened to our love
I wish I understood
It used to be so nice, it used to be so good
So when you're near me, darling can't you hear me SOS
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me SOS
When you're gone
How can I even try to go on
When you're gone
Though I try how can I carry on
You seem so far away though you are standing near
You made me feel alive, but something died I fear
I really tried to make it out
I wish I understood
What happened to our love, it used to be so good
So when you're near me, darling can't you hear me SOS
The love you gave me, nothing else can save me SOS
Scene:
The Irish team goes out for a celebration party, after unexpectedly beating England in the league stage - a near impossible victory. They go bar hoping and the team members take turns to sing to the tune of "Dancing Queen":
Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for the place to go
Where they play the right music,
getting in the swing
You come in to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance...
You are the Dancing Queen,
young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing Queen,
feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive,
having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene,
diggin' the Dancing Queen
